Red Rock Hike

This morning we loaded the car up and took a trip to a small hiking trail along the beautiful St. George red rock landscape. It was gorgeous. The shapes, lines, and positions of the rocks, carved from years of weathering, were fascinating. It made me wish I paid a little more attention in my geology classes to make more sense of it all. The kids had so much fun discovering and climbing.

We saw this amazing cave with brick around the openings and boards at the top. Margaret said this was probably built from the early settlers to stay in until they could construct their homes. She told us that in Manti, where she was raised and where her ancestors were asked by the prophet to colonize, they too stayed in these caves during the winter until they could construct proper houses. She told us that in the early Spring they had problems with rattlesnakes coming into the caves and to keep them out the pioneers had to place bowls of milk by the opening. The snakes would slither over, drink the milk and leave. Cool story.
